A third of the food we buy is wasted. Many farmers, wholesalers, exporters and retailers deal with huge amounts of food waste, even though their produce is still tasty and safe to eat. On the other hand, almost 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to live a healthy life. FoPo works on both sides of the food chain. We take the burden off of farmers, exporters and manufacturers and collect their rejected or surplus food, dehydrate it with gentle drying methods and turn it into naturally good food powder with prolonged shelf-life. FoPo Food Powder can then be used in various delicious food applications and by humanitarian organizations as a concentrated source of high quality nutrition in severe conditions with poor access to fresh produce.
This question posed by Thought for Food Challenge competition last 2015 challenged the team to think differently about the broken food system. Instead of producing more food, why don't we first tackle food waste?
With that frame in mind, FoPo Food Powder was born. We figured that if there will be 30% more people in the near future, we can still feed the world by saving the 30% of food we waste every day. To do that, we needed to extend the food shelf-life and optimize logistics.
In FoPo, we collect fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be wasted (because they are ugly or too ripe) and turn them into dried powder, prolonging shelf-life from 2 weeks to about 2 years. That way, we maximize logistics by transporting compact-friendly powders while also preserving nutrients by up to 90%.
Our goal is to save as much food, preserve its nutrition and feed as many people as we can. That's why for us, the work is never done! Using our different backgrounds and perspectives at looking into the food system (while also bringing some fun along), we are constantly paving for new ways to create a circular food economy.
With FoPo, we will help end food waste while saving food, deliciously!
